Reflecting and Communicating Research

In contemporary academic and designerley/artistic practice, communicating research results has therefore an essential part of scholarly work. To support this awareness, the doctoral program at HfG Offenbach offers the workshop “Reflecting on and Communicating Your Own Research.” It invites participants to explore how their projects can contribute to public discourse and how complex ideas can be conveyed in ways that are both precise and accessible.

The workshop encourages doctoral candidates to reflect on the aims, values, and relevance of their own research. Together, participants discuss the role of science and art in society and examine how academic work can inspire dialogue, foster understanding, and promote cultural exchange. Through theoretical input and interactive discussions, they explore how communication shapes the perception and impact of research.

A key element of the workshop is practical training. Participants experiment with different ways of presenting their projects—verbally, visually, and in writing—and receive feedback on how to express their ideas clearly and engagingly. The focus lies on identifying core messages, choosing suitable formats, and adapting communication styles for different audiences, from academic peers to the general public.

Beyond these exercises, the workshop offers insight into the broader field of science communication, its formats, institutions, and professional pathways. Case studies illustrate how researchers can successfully share their findings and build meaningful connections between research and society.
